Barcelona and Real Madrid at the Camp Nou. The two teams have become a little like Celtic and Rangers in Scotland in that they are almost certain to finish first and second are a whole lot better than all the others in their league. Cross
Before fans of the rest get cross with me it is worth pointing out that after just twelve games the two of them are already seven points clear of the rest and have only lost one game between them. In five of the last six seasons they have finished first and second. (In the other season Barcelona slipped all the way to third!)
It is a tough one to call this season as it always is, but the Mourinho factor and the new found defensive steel discovered at Real Madrid maybe gives them more of a chance against the awesome attacking threat of Barcelona than they have had over the past couple of seasons.
Debate
Another issue, as well as who is best out of the two sides, that will again come to the fore is the perennial debate about who is best out of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Everyone has an opinion about which player is the better one but I think it is an interesting, but fairly pointless, argument. Both players are a joy to watch and produce displays of breathtaking brilliance that most others could only dream of.
Exploits
Take a look at the goal scoring exploits of the two men below.
Lionel Messi:
- 22 goals in 17 games for Barcelona this season
- 54 goals in 48 games for Barcelona in 2010
- Has scored in nine consecutive games for Barca
- In last five seasons (this season last), has scored: 17, 16, 38, 47, 22
Cristiano Ronaldo:
- 16 goals in 18 games for Real Madrid this season
- 38 goals in 42 games for Real Madrid in 2010
- Has scored 14 goals in 12 La Liga games this term
- In last five seasons (first three with Manchester United), has scored: 23, 42, 26, 33, 18
Now you have read them, read them again! They are both astonishing.
Hat-trick
Both players warmed up for tomorrow’s big game with a hat-trick last time out in La Liga. They couldn’t have set things up any better.
So, which team is best and which player is best?
I’d go for Barcelona and Ronaldo. No, Real Madrid and Messi. No…who cares, I’m just going to love watching it!
