European Championship: One of the biggest sporting events in the world
and the evolution of its inception in the 50s is really huge.
The first UEFA General Secretary Henri Delaunay was the driving force behind the creation of the tournament for national teams. After his death in 1955 his son Pierre
took over and closely followed the birth of the race for which his father dreamed.
The role of senior Delaunay is not forgotten and Henri Delaunay trophy is his legacy.
The first match in the tournament was held in September 1958 when the USSR defeated Hungary 3: 1 qualifier in Moscow.
22 months later the final tournament of four teams took place in France, where Victor Monday scored with a header in extra time to give the Soviet victory over Yugoslavia in the final.
The next two editions were won by the hosts. In 1964, Spain beat media in front of 80,000 people at the Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid.
Four years later it was the turn of Italy. Goals from Luigi Riva and Pietro Anastasi helped the team to prevail against Yugoslavia in a replay of the final in Rome.
In 1972 Helmut Schöna put together a team of Germany, which many consider to be the greatest in the history of the European championships. Franz Beckenbauer had a huge impact, but by Gerd Mueller in attack West Germany beat the USSR 3: 0 to lift the trophy for the first time.
